VMF2021 Neighbourhood: South Granville

Carrielynn Victor’s mural for VMF2020

South Granville is the perfect neighbourhood to take on by foot. Bordered by lush green residential streets, South Granville transforms into a vibrant summertime hub for locals and tourists alike. It has one of the highest concentrations of galleries in the city, making it a fantastic place to enjoy some art and browse the neighbouring boutiques. Moreover, it has a beautiful selection of our murals! Be sure to explore the alleys and side streets to get a glimpse of some highly Instagrammable content.

Not only is it a wonderful celebration of the visual, but equally, the edible. There are over 30 restaurants and eateries, ranging from cafes and bakeries to smoothie bars and tea shops. Like many other neighbourhoods during the last year, South Granville has worked to incorporate more patios and plazas for eatery-goers to sit and enjoy the sun. If your home is in need of some sprucing, there’s a fun mix of home-goods and furniture stores for you to explore. The Stanley Theatre, a beloved cultural institution, is the spot for any avid theatre goers to catch a live show (and enjoy the lavish neoclassical interior!).

This summer, South Granville is launching the South Granville Summer Sessions. Every Thursday night, you can unwind with friends and listen to local musicians jam at the Plaza between 13th and 14th. All summer long on Fridays and Saturdays, The South Granville Business Improvement Association is welcoming the TGIF pod (Thank Granville It’s Food trucks), an amazing lineup of food trucks that will sit along West 10th Avenue by Fir Street and rotate weekly. Every Sunday at 10:00 am starting June 6th, South Granville is also hosting free yoga classes on a first come first serve basis taught by alternating local trainers.

Phil Gray is beautifying the community garden by the Douglas Reynolds Gallery with a piece titled Force of Nature. The mural depicts a modern representation of Salmon Woman, the key character in an aboriginal tale. Phil hopes that through using all the colours of the rainbow, the mural’s vibrance will serve “as a reminder that until women, LGBTQ+ and the environment are valued, respected, and reinstated back into their traditional roles and responsibilities, our communities will continue to struggle to be truly healthy and vibrant.”

Grace Cho’s mural will be one to visit if you’re needing a moment of serenity amidst the bustling city life. In her mural statement, she mentions that her piece is “inspired by the importance of rest in a world that attempts to measure us by our productivity.”
