VMF2021 Neighbourhood: Edgemont Village

Cynthia Tran Vo painting her mural in Edgemont

Edgemont Village, located in North Vancouver, is a quaint commercial area well loved by the neighbouring residents in Capilano Highlands, Delbrook, and Pemberton Heights. Reminiscent of a ski resort town, the village sits at the base of Grouse Mountain making it a perfect pit stop on the way up. It has a selection of artisanal shops, bakeries, and cafes for you to peruse as you wander. One of their more iconic town symbols is the Edgemont clock standing proudly at the intersection between Highland and Edgemont Boulevard. The clock was at risk of destruction, but was saved by local residents who bought and donated the clock to the village so it could be enjoyed for years to come.

After wandering the village, you can visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge which is only a few minutes away. If you’re in the mood for a stroll, the village is connected to the Murdo Frazer Park walk, as well as the Mosquito Creek walk. Parents rejoice, the Murdo Frazer Park has a beautiful new playground for your little ones to run off some energy. With lush trails and a selection of beautiful Indigenous totem poles, the park is the perfect spot to spend the afternoon.

This is the first year that VMF is connecting with a North Shore neighbourhood, and we couldn’t be happier about it! Reminiscent of the natural beauty that surrounds Edgemont, you’ll find that many of this year’s murals pay homage to the natural world. Cynthia Tran Vo’s mural, appropriately titled Accompanied By Wildlife, makes a nod towards sustainability, exploring the ways in which we as active parts of the ecosystem must learn to not only coexist with, but equally support the surrounding wildlife. Jessica Fortner’s Heron by Sea hopes to explore the ways in which we can find connection through community and nature. As a newcomer to Vancouver, Fortner’s mural reflects her experiences of the strong community and natural beauty that the city has to offer.
