#MAKEARTWHILEAPART Murals Going to New Homes
May 19
We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of joy and excitment the #makeartwhileapart project has catalyzed in the city. Thanks all for your kind words!
Even though the 60 murals we made are complete - We are not done yet. Phase 2 of the Provincial re-opening plan is kicking off this week and we are seeing the murals start to come down. The big question is, "Where are the murals going?"
Even though the murals were always intended to be temporary, we made sure there was a good plan for their use after being taken down. Based on a variety of factors, here are the places they are going over the next few weeks.
Habitat For Humanity It turns out the high quality plywood is well suited for use in the construction of homes for families in need of affordable housing. We are super happy to see the community benefits flow from this project.
Stanley Arts Club Theatre Stanley Arts Club Theatre Some of the plywood will be used in building and repairing theatre sets at the Stanley Theatre, a local theatre on South Granville St. Theatres are facing many challenges right now with the lack of safe options for large gatherings. When the South Granville BIA was asked to consider this donation, it felt right to for us all to step up and support the Stanley.
Museum of Vancouver (MOV) The Museum has been collecting stories, objects and documentation that will help future generrations connect with the experiences of Vancouverites during Covid-19. The MOV is stepping up and offering to store many of murals in its permanent collection. The MOV has has plans for an exhibit that would feature the murals and many other aspects of the current material and lived culture of the present moment. For more info on how the MOV has been engaging with issues pertaining to Covid-19, follow #isolatingtogetherMOV and visit their webpage here.
A Few Kept on Hand depending on how things progress in terms of public safety, some business owners have opted to store the boards on location in case they need to suspend business again in the future and re-install.
