Vancouver Mural Festival 2023 artists announced

With over 400 murals to date, the Vancouver Mural Festival’s open-air gallery grows every year with new incredible public art. We are excited to officially announce our 2023 mural artists, selected from almost 2,000 applications submitted earlier this year!

The Vancouver Mural Festival is back on August 4-13 for 10 jam-packed days and we can’t wait to showcase over 20 new murals across Metro Vancouver, including Downtown, the West End, Mount Pleasant, Yaletown, Granville Island, River District, Burnaby, and North Vancouver.

Download the free VMF app to find all the information on the 2023 artists and their murals.

Join us as we celebrate the beauty, culture, and diversity of Vancouver through the many talented local and international artists from backgrounds in gallery-centric fine art, tattoo, street art, graffiti, traditional and contemporary Indigenous design, and more.

Keep an eye out for artists painting across Metro Vancouver and discover all the new murals during Vancouver Mural Festival!

Some of this year’s highlights include several massive murals from Downtown to Strathcona, the final installation of the West End Laneway Mural Series painted by JNasty, Musqueam artist Kelly Cannell’s large mural at the entranceway of the BCIT Burnaby campus, the return of Murals Without Walls, a new series of six murals in River District focusing around the theme of connection, and three new murals to Granville Island.

“Granville Island is working with the Vancouver Mural Festival to bring three new pieces of Public Art to the island. Aligning with Granville Island’s mission to steward this public land for meaningful urban and social experimentation among diverse, creative, cultural, and business models, engaging local First Nations and communities while welcoming the world,” said Ruhamah Buchanan, Coordinator, Cultural Programming & Events, Granville Island.

“Granville Island has an incredible history as a place for public art, expression and creativity, and has supported the works of ground-breaking projects such as The Giants by Brazilian artists Osgemos by Biennale, and the first installation of Blanketing the City by Debra Sparrow and Vancouver Mural Festival In 2018. We look forward to welcoming new public art to the Artisan district, alongside resident sculptors, welders and illustrators.“

Hannah Watkins

For the 2023 edition of Murals Without Walls, Guest Curator, Christophe Devos, has selected three established artists, Hannah Watkins, Zahra Hosseini, and Tuyết Ánh Judith Nguyễn, to create two works of art each at Main Street and 7th Ave. The six 100 sq ft artworks will be installed for 3 months and will be in place to be part of Make Good Party on August 5th and 6th during the opening weekend of the festival.

Murals Without Walls is a collaborative program that addresses the systemic barriers that limit participation of audiences and artists with disabilities in accessing opportunities to view and create murals and public art, while prototyping new methodologies and formats of creating space and processes that can bring more 2-D temporary and semi-permanent public art opportunities for Vancouver and beyond.
