VMF 2021 Online talk discussing the newly launched documentary film that explores the Blanketing The City mural series

We would like to invite you a special evening program that launches the short film specially created to tell the story of the Blanketing The City mural series (2018-2021). The film, Weaving The Path: Blanketing The City will be followed by a conversation and Q + A with the film makers and the three weaving artists, Debra Sparrow, Chief Janice George, and Angela George.

Event hosted on Zoom. Details for attending with registration.

Blanketing The City (2018-2021) is a public art mural series and Reconciliation process designed by acclaimed xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Weaver and Graphic Designer, Debra Sparrow in collaboration with Vancouver Mural Festival. The series boldly affirms the resurgence and importance of Coast Salish weaving on these lands, and directly combats the ongoing systemic suppression of Indigenous visual culture.

Debra Sparrow invited master weavers Chief Janice George (Sḵwxwú7mesh) and Angela George (səlilwətaɬ) to collaborate on the design of 7 landmark murals blanketing Cathedral Square Park. Blanketing The City IV: Cathedral Square boldly transmits and magnifies the visibility of xwməθkwəyə̓m, Sḵwxwú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ culture on their ancestral lands. This project is a deep exploration and implementation of Indigenous visibility in public spaces via a multi-year collaboration between these weavers. Blanketing The City IV: Cathedral Square, will be the first semi-permanent public art collaboration between weavers from the three local nations.

Located in a large below-grade BC Hydro sub-station, Cathedral Park Square is one of a few permanent structures designed by Bruno Freschi for Expo 86. Today, the park’s six massive cement pillars re-establish and proclaim the visual culture of the three local nations. As the invisible hydro substation underneath the park supplies power to the downtown core, Blanketing The City powers a resurgent visibility of Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh culture across the city.
